Rice House Healthcare Foundation

The mission of the Rice House Healthcare Foundation (RHHF) is to engage in and sponsor research projects and studies to investigate the role of diet in treating and preventing chronic, non-communicable diseases such as type-2 diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, and hypertension.  In particular, the Foundation intends to fund studies of the efficacy on the Rice Diet, first developed and implemented at Duke University by physician-scientist, Walter Kempner, MD in 1939. The Rice Diet uses a very low sodium diet comprised of rice, fruit, grains, and vegetables and occasional fish to promote amelioration and healing of the above-named medical disorders.  A research protocol is already developed and ready for implementation to study the response of type-2 diabetes mellitus to the Rice Diet.

The magnitude of the world's burden of non-communicable disease is staggering. The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration estimates that the global prevalence of obesity will reach about 20% of the world's adult population by the year 2025. And the latest report from the World Health Organization estimates that over 422 millions people around the world suffer from diabetes (mostly type-2 diabetes), and that this is the fastest growth disease in the world. The focus of the RHHF fundraising efforts is on research studies that have the potential for global significance.

The Rice Diet Healthcare Program has formed an alliance with Duke University Medical Center's Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nutrition to assist the proposed studies.

The Rice House Healthcare Foundation is a 501(c) (3) tax exempt Public Charity, organized under section 170, 2055, 2106 & 2522 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986.
